Greasy Joe’s, one of Melbourne’s most iconic institutions for more than 30 years, established a reputation for its signature burgers and larger than life breakfasts, but today after undergoing a huge transformation the former fast food joint is set to become the place in St Kilda for top-notch cocktails, quality local beers, Australian wines, and a great new killer seasonal menu…Welcome the new Joe’s Bar and Dining Hall.

Fresh from a makeover, the Acland Street icon has shaken the grease off its former self and is impressing locals with a contemporary, hip new fit-out courtesy of Diane Bergeron Interiors, fabulous drinks menu, friendly staff and a casual yet quality old school menu, where seasonal starters are a stand out.

The man behind the movement, Rob Gringlas took to the helm at Joe’s Bar after returning to Melbourne, his hometown, following a stint in the UK heading up Platform, London.

“I wanted to bring the best of what I saw around the world to my stomping ground and what better place to do it than Joe’s in the heart of Acland Street. In its previous life, Joe’s was part of the St Kilda fabric, and I want to take it to its former glory, but this time by creating a really great quality bar space to share drinks with friends over excellent yet unpretentious food,” says Gringlas.

The bespoke cocktail menu features a range of house infusions and homemade syrups, offering a taste of something a little different. Take the Mojito Bodeguita, cleverly named in homage of Hemmingway’s favourite bar in Havana, the Joe’s Bar team spice their own rum and create the citrus syrup from scratch using fresh grapefruit. Others include the Knickerbocker a La Monsieur, Satan’s Whiskers and The Secret Cocktail (the actual name is revealed after a couple).

Joe’s also offers a coveted all-Australian beer and wine list, focusing on local craft brews like Stone & Wood, Mountain Goat and the much-loved St Kilda Brew. A rotational draught list ensures there is always something new and exciting for beer lovers to test out.

The Joe’s Bar team prides themselves on using local, fresh produce for both the innovative cocktail list and dining hall menu, which includes; Tastes, Seasonal Starters, Slow & Low, Market Salads, Joes Burgers & Dogs, Main Courses and Desserts & Cheese, making it perfect for a sit down meal, or number of shared plates amongst friends.

In a nod to its past life, the menu includes a couple of burgers, the Angus Beef Burger and the Chicken Thigh Burger (with Triple Cooked Chips, Fried Egg or Cured Bacon as added ‘extras’), but it’s the seasonal starters, quality steaks, market salads, barbequed meats and slow cooked dishes that are making a real debut. A standout favourite is the Slow & Low section, which features the Pulled Pork Rolls, BBQ Sauce, Apple Chutney & Crackling and Slow Cooked Pork Ribs with Summer Slaw.

Joe’s Bar promises the highest quality ingredients, offering beef from Largo Meat, one of Melbourne’s best suppliers for their steaks and burgers. The Porterhouse, Hanger and Rump Steaks are cooked to perfection by Joe’s Bar passionate chefs and served with Chat Potatoes, spiced pumpkin, grilled baby shallots and truffled mustard sauce.

For locals and visitors alike, Joe’s Bar is the perfect place to sit back with friends, enjoy a drink or two, have a bite to eat and watch the famous St Kilda show roll by.
